In 2009, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena (Aceto Balsamico di Modena) was registered as a PGI by the European Union. The so called “Black Gold of Modena” is today one of the ambassadors for Italian food excellence in the world, being exported to over 120 Countries.
The European logo of the “Protected Geographical Indication”, represented on every bottle of the authentic Balsamic Vinegar of Modena serves as a mark of reference and a guarantee for consumers.
But how can you recognize the authentic Balsamic Vinegar of Modena?
There are three elements to check when buying it:
- The presence of the complete designation “Aceto Balsamico di Modena”, that may be accompanied by the translation into the language of the country where the product is sold. A different wording or the presence of only some of these elements, such as the words “balsamic” or “Modena” are indicative of imitations.
- The presence of the wording “Protected Geographical Indication” or its acronym “PGI” in Italian or in the language of the country where the product is sold.
- The presence of the yellow and blue Protected Geographical Indication logo. Only for black and white labels, this logo can be used in the same colors.
The designation “Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP” on the label can be accompanied by the word “Invecchiato”, only for products that have remained in wooden barrels or vats for more than three years.
